What Are We Doing?

When we started our Event Management class at the beginning of our 2nd Year, we were set the task to decide on, and hold an event in order to pass this unit. After many ideas, arguements and planning we decided on our event:

We decided on a five day expedition on the West Highland Way - a trail which covers over 90 miles of Scotland.

The route will start in Milngavie, near Glasgow, and lead us to our our final stop in Fort William. If we want to achieve our 5 day timeline, we are required to walk an average of 18 miles per day, and not just on straights, we cover some of the hardest hills and land to walk on in Scotland.

In order to put this into context, we have to walk from Milngavie to Balmaha. This is going to be a fairly demanding 5 days, but when we decided we would complete the walk for charity it changed our whole perspective.

Our walk starts on the 25th April 2006 and we aim to finish on the 29th April.

Why Did We Decide On The WHW?

Event Management has been runnning for many years as part of the HND Fitness, Health and Exercise course in Anniesland, and each year will see new students organsing an event.
We originally came up with ideas similar to previous years, such as a snowboarding weekend, an athletics day, abseiling and lots of other middle of the road sports events. Some of our class thought these ideas were suitable, but there were a portion of the class who didn't feel there would be a great level of difficulty or much to be achieved out of these events.
It wasn't until our lecturer, David Mckay, brought up the idea of the West Highland Way that we realised it would be a great feat to organise this event.

We realised that by walking the West Highland Way we would gain a brilliant sense of achievment, and we will also be getting the chance to do something that we will remember for all out lives and later in life be able to say "Yeah, I walked the West Highland Way when I was younger".
There was a lack of motivation in the class at first, some people weren't keen on taking part in the 5day trek, but once we decided it would be done for charity everyone became much more eager to particpate.

So what is the West Highland Way I hear you say...

The West Highland Way is 152km (95 miles) long. The walk links Milngavie to Fort William - from the outskirts of Scotland’s largest city to the foot of its highest mountain, following the shores of its largest freshwater loch.

It passes from the lowlands, across the Highland Boundary Fault and on into the Scottish Highlands. Much of the Way follows ancient and historic routes of communication, and makes use of:

The drove roads along which highlanders herded their cattle and sheep to market in the lowlands.

Military roads built by troops to help control the Jacobite Clans.

Old coaching roads and disused railway lines from the more recent past.
